Unveiling the Path to Growth: Islamic Psychology for Blossoming Mindsets

Introduction

Have you ever felt trapped by your own thoughts, held back by self-doubt, and longing for a way to break free from the constraints of your mind? Have you ever felt stuck, dull like an unsharpened pencil yearning to leave its indelible mark on the world? You grapple with self-doubt, a voice whispering limitations that hold you back from achieving your goals.  Sounds familiar? Despair not for this internal struggle is a universal human experience, one that transcends backgrounds and beliefs. But what if there was a way to transform this dull pencil into a powerful instrument, capable of etching your dreams onto the canvas of life? What if there was a way to unlock your true potential and rewrite your story. We are about to embark on a journey, a quest for liberation, one that merges the profound insights of psychology with the timeless wisdom of Islamic teachings.

The internet, social, print and electronic media are all awash with the latest craze: mindset. “Everyone” is talking about mindset and how to harness it to produce the best out of everyday life situations, business, sports, education etc. The list is endless, but why all this hype all of a sudden? All of a sudden everyone is an expert on mindset; all of a sudden everyone is an expert on personal development. One can speculate that with the advent of social media knowledge of psychology and general principles of personal development and improvement are now accessible to a great number of people leading to the ignition of the urge to learn and apply more principles of psychology and related fields to everyday life.

One may also speculate that generally life in this modern age has become hectic, stressful and is changing at supersonic speed. This has led to a great deal of people trying to slow down and find meaning in their lives leading them to psychology and spirituality. What exactly is mindset? What determines our mindset and what can we do about it. Is mindset overrated?

This platform seeks to present strategies and tools for individuals seeking to transform their lives in order to bring the best out of their lives. We integrate mindset psychology, narrative psychology and Islamic principles. Subtly this platform empowers personal transformation through Islamic psychology.

We will address pertinent questions like: Is your mindset everything, what is the ideal mindset and how do we achieve it? Which principles and theories are best to achieve the ideal mindset? These questions are only the tip of an iceberg. Whatever principles or theories that may be used should be unshakable, grounded and stable through the test of time if they are to be valid. They should be based on human nature because human nature is constant, unchangeable through test of time.

As we delve into the realms of mindset and narrative psychology, we'll uncover the keys to unlocking your true potential, guided by the light of faith and the wisdom of the Quran and Hadith. This exploration caters to both the curious reader and the academic mind. We'll present psychological concepts in an engaging and accessible manner, making them relevant to your everyday life. For the academic reader, we'll provide references to scholarly sources, allowing for deeper exploration. The Quran and the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) are replete with verses and stories that encourage self-improvement, resilience, and a trust in Allah's (SWT) plan.

Igniting the spark.

We all yearn for growth, the need for becoming the best versions of ourselves. However, the path to self-improvement is often infested with obstacles. Limiting beliefs, negative self-talk, and a continuous onslaught of external pressures can at times make transformation seem an uphill battle. Self-help shelves overflow with promising solutions, however this begs the question: but which course offers a grounded, sustainable approach?

The Call to Transformation

Psychology has adequately documented authentic research and studies on the human capacity for growth.  Chief among the scholars of human growth is Carol Dweck whose research on mindsets highlights the power of believing in our ability to learn and improve. Nevertheless, our internal narratives – the stories we tell ourselves about who we are and what we're capable of – also play a crucial role. James Pennebaker (2011) suggests that, writing about our experiences has the ability to help us attain an in-depth understanding of ourselves and rephrase limiting narratives.

Blossoming Mindsets: A Unique Approach

Welcome to Blossoming Mindsets! We embark on this journey together, exploring personal growth and development through the lens of Islamic Psychology. It offers a unique perspective on well-being, integrating traditional psychological concepts with core Islamic principles. This holistic framework empowers you to understand yourself and navigate life's challenges. In this introductory post as already pointed out, we explore the intersection of mindset, narrative psychology, and Islamic principles. Our goal is to equip you with tools and strategies for personal development, allowing you to become the best version of yourself

In this post we expose what Islam teaches about possessing the correct mindset, we look at what type of mindset is cultivated in Islam using the Quran and Hadith as primary sources of Islamic knowledge. It is very important to note that in Islam it all begins with intention. The direction your thoughts take, the emanating emotions and ultimately your actions (behavior) are all dependent on your intentions. It is for this reason that we begin by looking at the connection between mindset and intention .Closely connected to the aspect of intention is trust in Allah.

Islamic teachings on mindset emphasize the importance of faith, intention, reflection, and positive outlook in shaping one's character and actions. By integrating these teachings with insights from mindset psychology and narrative psychology, individuals can cultivate a mindset conducive to personal growth, resilience, and spiritual fulfillment.

Understanding that mindset is not only a matter of cognitive processes but also deeply rooted in faith and intention empowers individuals to harness their inner resources for transformation into the best version of themselves. Through sincere belief, positive intention, reflection, and optimism, individuals can navigate life's challenges with resilience, gratitude, and spiritual insight, ultimately striving towards personal excellence and closeness to Allah.

Why Islamic Principles?

One might ask why, in a world obsessed with cutting-edge technology and the latest trends, we should turn to Islamic principles for personal development. The answer lies in the timelessness of these principles. They are not arbitrary rules, but rather, grounded in the very essence of human nature.

Universal Truths for a Universal Being: Humans, across cultures and throughout history, share a core set of emotional needs and desires. We crave connection, purpose, and a sense of belonging. We grapple with feelings of fear, anger, and envy. These fundamental aspects of human nature haven't changed significantly since the revelation of the Quran. Islamic principles address these universal human needs. They provide a framework for cultivating compassion, developing healthy relationships, and navigating challenges with resilience.

Technology and Transformation:  While technology has undoubtedly transformed the world, it hasn't altered the core of who we are. The anxieties of navigating social dynamics, the pursuit of meaning, and the struggle with self-doubt remain central to the human experience. Islamic principles, rooted in timeless human needs, offer a powerful toolset for addressing these challenges, irrespective of the technological landscape

Defining Islamic Psychology

Islamic Psychology is the study of the soul, mental processes and behavior according to the principles of psychology and Islamic sciences. (Rassool et al., 2020) It emphasizes the integration of faith and psychology in promoting mental well-being and resilience.

Islamic psychology, as expounded by Dr. Aisha Utz, offers a comprehensive theory of our spiritual nature, purpose, and priorities in life. It emphasizes attaining serenity and happiness in this life and the next. According to her, psychology from an Islamic perspective involves “the study of the soul; the ensuing behavioral, emotional, and mental processes; and both the seen and unseen aspects that influence these elements” . The body is considered a vehicle for the soul, and our spiritual level affects our thoughts, feelings, and behavior. Dr. Utz’s book, “Psychology from the Islamic Perspective,” provides further insights based on the Qur’an, Sunnah, and scientific research . You can find more details in her work.

The International Association of Islamic Psychology defines Islamic Psychology as the Psychology that is based on an Islamic paradigm. In defining what Islamic psychology is, Sharafat Hussain Khan, a Muslim scholar, in his seminar paper, ‘Islamization of Knowledge: A Case for Islamic Psychology’ gave the following description of what Islamic psychology refers to in essence:

                  I.            Science of regulating human behavior in accordance with the Divine Will.

II.            It is a science of behavior modification towards realization of Divine Will or

III.            Study of human behavior within Islamic tenets or

IV.            Islamic psychology is a science which deals with behavior from an Islamic perspective. (Abdul Razak & Hisham 2012)

The Power of Mindset

Mindset refers to our beliefs about ourselves and our abilities. Carol Dweck, a renowned psychologist, revolutionized the field with her groundbreaking work on mindsets. She identified two fundamental mindsets: fixed and growth. (Dweck, 2006)

Dweck’s book Growth Mindset: A New Psychology of Success (2006) poses a seemingly simple research question: “What are the consequences of thinking that your intelligence or personality is something you can develop, as opposed to something that is a fixed, deep-seated trait?”

•Fixed Mindset: Individuals with a fixed mindset believe their intelligence, talents, and abilities are fixed traits. They see setbacks as a reflection of their limitations and tend to avoid challenges for fear of failure. This can lead to discouragement in the face of difficulty and lower achievement.

Growth Mindset: In contrast, those with a growth mindset view intelligence and abilities as aspects that can be developed through effort, learning, and perseverance. This approach fosters resilience, a willingness to embrace challenges, and a hunger for personal growth.

Picture the difference:

•A student with a fixed mindset facing academic challenges might conclude, "I'm not good at physics. Why bother trying?"

•A student with a growth mindset might say, "This is difficult, but with hard work and a good study strategy, I can improve."

People with a growth mindset are more likely to thrive in the face of difficulty, set goals to challenge themselves, and believe they can acquire new skills with dedication. Research shows a growth mindset is associated with greater happiness, fulfillment, and success in various aspects of life. Thankfully, fixed mindsets can be changed.

Key characteristics of a growth mindset:

Embracing Challenges: Rather than avoiding difficulties, growth-minded individuals see them as chances to learn and improve.

Persistence: They persistently work toward their goals, even when faced with setbacks.

Learning from Feedback: Constructive feedback is seen as valuable information for growth.

Inspiration by Others’ Success: Instead of feeling threatened, they are inspired by others’ achievements.

Impact on Personal Development:

A growth mindset fosters resilience, adaptability, and a willingness to learn. It enables individuals to overcome obstacles and achieve their full potential.

Key characteristics of a fixed mindset:

Avoiding Challenges: Fixed-minded individuals prefer tasks that confirm their existing abilities.

Defensiveness: They may become defensive when receiving feedback or facing criticism.

Limiting Beliefs: Fixed mindset leads to self-imposed limitations.

Comparison and Jealousy: They may feel threatened by others’ success.

Impact on Personal Development:

A fixed mindset hinders growth, limits achievement, and prevents individuals from reaching their true potential.

The Power of Narrative

Narrative psychology posits that our identities are shaped by the stories we tell ourselves. Humans are wired for stories. Stories shape our understanding of the world, ourselves, and our place within it (Bruner, 1990). The stories we tell ourselves about who we are and what we can achieve significantly impact our behavior.

Narrative transformation, a concept explored by Dan McAdams (2006), proposes that by reframing our personal narratives, we can alter our self-perception and motivations. Narrative psychology delves into the stories individuals construct about themselves, which influence their identities and behaviors. By reframing narratives, individuals can reshape their self-perception and behaviors.

Narrative psychology emphasizes the role of personal narratives in shaping our identity. These narratives can be empowering or limiting. A fixed mindset narrative might sound like, "I'm not creative enough to succeed in this field," or "Failure is a sign of weakness." On the other hand, a growth mindset narrative might say, "This challenge will help me learn and improve," or "I can develop my skills with effort and practice. When faced with challenges, our inner narrative often focuses on limitations and self-doubt.  This reinforces a negative self-image.

Narrative Psychology Principles:

Human Sense-Making Through Narrative: Narrative psychology posits that humans primarily make sense of their world and themselves through narratives. These narratives organize knowledge, memories, intentions, life histories, and personal identities into meaningful patterns.

Narrative as an Inherent Structure: Narrative isn’t limited to verbal storytelling; it’s an inherent structure of human action and experience. The concept of narrative extends beyond mere narration—it’s a way we perceive, think, remember, feel, imagine, and make moral choices.

Cognitive Adaptability: Narrative is a highly adaptable mode of cognitive and communicative practice. It supports problem-solving activities and plays a crucial role in understanding human behavior.

Narrative Intelligence: Recent research explores narrative intelligence and cognitive narratology, emphasizing narrative as a cognitive structure.

Impact on Personal Development:

Healing and Transformation: Personal narratives become powerful tools for healing and catalysts for transformation. By reframing our life stories, we can find deep relatability and valuable insights, easing the way for others.

Springboard, Not Anchor: Our back-story serves as a springboard, propelling us forward to contribute our learned lessons to others. Viktor Frankl’s work exemplifies using past experiences to create purpose and offer value.

Embrace Objective Meaning: When we objectively examine our experiences, we unveil hidden meanings. Extracting meaning from our narratives allows us to learn, grow, and contribute.

The Essence of Islamic Storytelling: Lessons from the Quran and Hadith

It should be noted that stories are not just external; they are also internal. The narratives we tell ourselves about our capabilities, limitations, and potential for growth significantly influence our lives. The Quran is a powerful narrative, filled with verses that inspire us, challenge us, and guide us on the path of self-discovery and spiritual fulfillment.

Islamic storytelling holds a profound significance in conveying moral lessons, spiritual insights, and guidance for believers. Rooted in the Quranic narratives and the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) recorded in the Hadith literature, Islamic storytelling serves as a means of educating, inspiring, and guiding individuals towards righteousness and spiritual growth. This section outlines the essence of Islamic storytelling, drawing (brief) lessons from the Quran and Hadith.

Quranic Stories: Timeless Lessons of Faith and Resilience

The Quran is replete with stories of prophets, righteous individuals, and historical events, which serve as timeless examples of faith, resilience, and divine providence. These narratives are imbued with moral lessons and spiritual wisdom, guiding believers towards righteousness and piety. One such example is the story of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham), whose unwavering faith and submission to Allah exemplify the essence of Islamic storytelling

In the pursuit of personal growth and self-improvement, individuals often seek guidance from various sources, including religious texts and psychological principles. In Islam, the Quran and Hadith provide profound insights into human behavior, mindset, and narratives

Promoting Growth Mindset through Stories:

Psychological research suggests that storytelling can influence mindset and behavior, shaping individuals' beliefs about their abilities and potential. In Islam, stories of perseverance, courage, and steadfastness inspire believers to adopt a growth mindset, characterized by resilience and optimism. The story of Prophet Musa (Moses) and his encounter with Pharaoh exemplifies the importance of trust in Allah and unwavering determination:

قَالَ كَلَّآ إِنَّ مَعِىَ رَبِّى سَيَهْدِينِ

Translation:"He (Musa) said, 'No! Indeed, with me is my Lord; He will guide me.'" (Quran, 26:62) Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) 26:62

This verse from the Quran reflects Prophet Musa's confidence in Allah's guidance and his unwavering commitment to fulfilling his mission despite facing formidable challenges. It stems from growth mindset roots of courage, resilience and perseverance. It is a statement of persistence.

The Interplay of Mindset, Intention (Niyyah), and Trust in Allah (Tawakkul):

In Islamic teachings, mindset, intention (niyyah), and trust in Allah (Tawakkul) are interconnected aspects that profoundly influence one's actions, attitudes, and outcomes. Let's explore how these elements intersect and contribute to personal development and spiritual growth, drawing insights from Quranic verses, Hadith, and psychological perspectives.

Importance of Intention (Niyyah):

Intention (niyyah) is the inner motive or purpose behind every action. In Islam, intentions are crucial as they determine the spiritual value and sincerity of deeds.

Mindset as Belief and Intention: Quranic Perspective:

In the Quran, mindset is often portrayed as a matter of belief and intention, shaping one's actions and character. The verse below is an example in point:

مَآ أَصَابَ مِن مُّصِيبَةٍ إِلَّا بِإِذْنِ ٱللَّهِ وَمَن يُؤْمِنۢ بِٱللَّهِ يَهْدِ قَلْبَهُۥ وَٱللَّهُ بِكُلِّ شَىْءٍ عَلِيمٌ

Translation: "No calamity can ever befall [man] unless it be by God's leave: hence, whoever believes in God guides his [own] heart [towards this truth]; and God has full knowledge of everything." At-Taghabun (Loss and Gain) 64:11

From the verse we can learn that if one’s heart is guided so is their mind and definitely their intention becomes pure. This verse indicates that belief in Allah (faith) has a profound effect on one's mindset and guidance. It emphasizes the importance of having a positive and steadfast mindset rooted in faith.

Mindset and Intention: Hadith Perspective:

1. Intention and Actions:

In the Hadith, Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) emphasized the significance of intention in shaping one's actions and mindset as highlighted by the Hadith below:

إِنَّمَا الْأَعْمَالُ بِالنِّيَّةِ وَإِنَّمَا لِكُلِّ امْرِئٍ مَا نَوَى

Translation: "Verily, actions are judged by intentions and every person will have only what they intended." (Sahih al-Bukhari)

This Hadith underscores the importance of cultivating a positive and sincere mindset through pure intentions in all actions. It implies that a mindset rooted in good intentions leads to righteous deeds and spiritual growth. This highlights the importance of our internal narratives, as they form the foundation for our outward actions.  If our narratives are filled with self-doubt or negativity, they can hinder our growth.  Conversely, positive narratives fueled by faith can empower us.

2. Positive Outlook:

Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) also encouraged believers to maintain a positive outlook, even in challenging circumstances as highlighted in the hadith below:

Translation: "How wonderful is the case of a believer; there is good for him in everything and this applies only to a believer. If prosperity attends him, he expresses gratitude to Allah and that is good for him, and if adversity befalls him, he endures it patiently and that is better for him." (Sahih Muslim)

This Hadith promotes a mindset of optimism and gratitude, highlighting the believer's ability to find good in every situation and maintain patience during adversity. This Hadith is actually fabric of the growth mindset and positive narrative.

Integration

Niyyah (Intention) and Goal Setting: Setting clear intentions (Niyyah) aligned with Islamic values and framing them with a growth mindset can empower individuals to achieve their goals. For example, instead of simply wanting to "be good at public speaking," your intention could be "to improve my communication skills to better share Islamic knowledge with others."

A sincere intention (niyyah) combined with trust in Allah (Tawakkul) forms the foundation of a positive and resilient mindset. Believers with a growth-oriented mindset approach challenges with the intention of pleasing Allah, trusting in His wisdom and guidance.

Psychologically, this integration aligns with concepts of optimism, resilience, and self-efficacy. Research suggests that individuals, who maintain a positive mindset, set clear intentions, and trust in their abilities are better equipped to navigate adversity and achieve success.(Dweck,2006)

Mindset and Tawakkul (Trust in Allah):

Definition of Tawakkul:

Trust in Allah (Tawakkul) entails relying on Allah’s wisdom, providence, and guidance in all matters. It is not passive resignation but an active surrender to Allah’s will while striving earnestly

2. Quranic Guidance on Tawakkul:

The Quran repeatedly encourages believers to place their trust in Allah and rely on Him alone as highlighted by the verses below:

قُل لَّن يُصِيبَنَآ إِلَّا مَا كَتَبَ ٱللَّهُ لَنَا هُوَ مَوْلَىٰنَا وَعَلَى ٱللَّهِ فَلْيَتَوَكَّلِ ٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ

Translation: “Say: 'Never can anything befall us save what God has decreed! He is our Lord Supreme; and in God let the believers place their trust!'” At-Tauba (The Repentance) 9:51

Translation:God - there is no deity save Him!  In God then let the believers place their trust. At-Taghabun (Loss and Gain) 64:13

Translation: If God succours you, none can ever overcome you; but if He should forsake you, who could succour you thereafter? In God, then, let the believers place their trust! Al-Imran (The Family of Imran) 3:160

These verses highlight the importance of Tawakkul, trusting in Allah's plan.  A growth mindset does not negate Tawakkul.  While we strive and exert effort, we trust in Allah's ultimate guidance and outcome.  This fosters a sense of peace and perseverance, even in the face of challenges.

To sum it up all, the integration of mindset, intention (niyyah), and trust in Allah (Tawakkul) is paramount for personal development and spiritual growth. By nurturing a growth-oriented mindset rooted in sincere intentions and reliance on Allah, individuals can cultivate resilience, perseverance, and inner peace amidst life's challenges. This integration aligns with Islamic teachings and psychological principles, empowering individuals to transform into the best version of themselves, both spiritually and psychologically.

Applying this Framework for Transformation:

Set Clear Intentions (Niyyah): Align your goals with Islamic values and frame them with a growth mindset. For example, instead of simply wanting to "be good at public speaking," your intention could be "to improve my communication skills to better share Islamic knowledge with others."

Embrace Effort with Tawakkul: Work diligently towards your goals, but remember that outcomes are ultimately in Allah's hands. This prevents discouragement and fosters perseverance.

Reframe Challenges: View setbacks as opportunities for growth and learning. Trust that Allah (SWT) is placing you on the best path for your development.

By cultivating a growth mindset, setting clear intentions (niyyah), and maintaining trust in Allah (Tawakkul), you can embark on a powerful journey of self-transformation.  Remember, the journey itself is a form of worship, and Allah (SWT) appreciates your sincere efforts.

Taking Charge of Your Narrative: How Islam Empowers a Growth Mindset

The stories we tell ourselves, both conscious and unconscious, shape our reality. Islam, rich in tradition and guidance, offers powerful tools to harness our internal narratives and transform our mindsets. By integrating Islamic principles with the fields of mindset and narrative psychology, we can equip ourselves with transferable skills to rewrite our self-talk and become the best versions of ourselves.

The Power of Positive Self-Talk: The Hadith

Hadith collections contain anecdotes and stories from the life of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and his companions, illustrating principles of faith, resilience, and moral conduct. For example, the story of Prophet Yusuf (Joseph) in Surah Yusuf offers profound insights into themes of patience, trust in Allah, and forgiveness.

Self-Discovery in Islamic Tradition

Self-discovery in Islam involves introspection, reflection, and seeking knowledge about oneself and one's relationship with Allah. The Quran encourages believers to contemplate the signs of Allah's creation and to reflect on their own inner selves. For example,

Translation: [and] who remember God when they stand, and when they sit, and when they lie down to sleep, and [thus] reflect on the creation of the heavens and the earth: 'O our Sustainer! Thou hast not created [aught of] this without meaning and purpose.  Limitless art Thou in Thy glory! Keep us safe, then, from suffering through fire! Al-Imran (The Family of Imran) 3:191

Translation: And He it is who sends forth the winds as a glad tiding of His coming grace-so that, when they have brought heavy clouds, We may drive them towards dead land and cause thereby water to descend; and by this means do We cause all manner of fruit to come forth. Even thus shall We cause the dead to come forth: [and this] you ought to keep in mind. Al-A'raf (The Heights) 7:57

Translation: And it is He who has spread the earth wide and placed on it firm mountains and running waters, and created thereon two sexes of every [kind of] plant; [and it is He who] causes the night to cover the day. Verily, in all this there are messages indeed for people who think! Ar-Ra'd (The Thunder) 13:3

Translation: They will ask thee about intoxicants and games of chance. Say: 'In both there is great evil as well as some benefit for man; but the evil which they cause is greater than the benefit which they bring.'  And they will ask thee as to what they should spend [in God's cause]. Say: 'Whatever you can spare.' In this way God makes clear unto you His messages, so that you might reflect. Al-Baqara (The Cow) 2:219

These verses highlight the importance of self-awareness and understanding one's identity and purpose in the context of human diversity. Each and every one of the verses above direct individuals towards contemplation, reflection, self analysis and contemplation of one’s circumstance. There is emphasis on the importance of reflection and mindfulness in Islam. Reflection and mindfulness are basic ingredients of a growth mindset and a stepping stone towards personal development.

The Power of Storytelling in Islam:

In the Quran, Allah frequently employs storytelling to convey profound truths and moral lessons to humanity. These stories serve as timeless examples of faith, resilience, and redemption. One such example is the story of Prophet Yusuf (Joseph), which illustrates the themes of patience, forgiveness, and divine providence the Quranic verses below highlight this:

Translation: "There was certainly in their stories a lesson for those of understanding. Never was the Qur'an a narration invented, but a confirmation of what was before it and a detailed explanation of all things and guidance and mercy for a people who believe." Yusuf (Joseph) 12:111

Translation:And convey unto them, setting forth the truth, the story of the two sons of Adam -how each offered a sacrifice, and it was accepted from one of them whereas it was not accepted from the other. [And Cain] said: 'I will surely slay thee!' [Abel] replied: 'Behold, God accepts only from those who are conscious of Him. Al-Ma'idah (The Table Spread) 5:27

Translation:And [remember:] out of all the accounts relating to the [earlier] apostles We convey unto thee [only] that wherewith We [aim to] make firm thy heart:  for through these [accounts] comes the truth unto thee, as well as an admonition and a reminder unto all believers. Hud (The Prophet Hud) 11:120

Translation:Unto those [earlier] communities - some of whose stories We [now] relate unto thee -there had indeed come apostles of their own with all evidence of the truth; but they would not believe in anything to which they had once given the lie:  thus it is that God seals the hearts of those who deny the truth; Al-A'raf (The Heights) 7:101

These verses highlight the transformative power of storytelling in guiding believers towards wisdom, understanding, and faith. They highlight the motivational and inspirational role of storytelling in the Quran and Islam. The constant reading, telling and reflection upon such stories cultivates an internal narrative that identifies with the virtues taught by such stories such as patience, perseverance ,mindfulness, forgiveness, courage in the face of adversity and so forth. In short these stories serve as a silo of positive internal narrative that cultivate the growth mindset and lead to development of the best version of the self.
